Bird Is The Word Week 11: vs. Washington Redskins

Posted: November 22, 2013 in Eagles

Bird Is The Word.

IT’S ALL OVER! (clap, clap, clap, clap, clap). IT’S ALL OVER! (clap, clap, clap, clap, clap).

That’s right, the Eagles’ 10 game home losing streak was finally ended on Sunday afternoon. And, as an added bonus, the Eagles head into the bye week in sole possession of first place in the NFC East.

It was a bit of a roller coaster ride, as the Eagles saw the Redskins nearly came back after being down 24-0 going into the fourth quarter. However, Robert Griffin III threw an interception with a little over 2 minutes left to seal the Eagles first home win in over 400 days.

With the win, the Eagles enter their bye week in sole possession of first place in the NFC East.

413 Days…

In week 3 of the 2012 season, the Eagles beat the New York Giants at home after Lawrence Tynes missed two consecutive field goals (Andy Reid tried to “ice” him, so he had a second attempt).

It would be 413 days before the Eagles celebrated another win in front of their fans at Lincoln Financial Field. That’s right, a full calendar year passed before their next home win.

The Eagles finally ended that drought on Sunday and gave the fans a win to celebrate. Not only that, but the Eagles are also on a three-game winning streak as they head into the bye week. To say they needed that win is a nominee for understatement of the year.

Now that they have ended the drought, they need to build on that momentum.

Even Vick Says “Nick”

Nick Foles has quarterbacked the Eagles to three straight wins and a spot at the top of the NFC East. Not to mention, he has thrown 16 touchdowns and 0 interceptions since taking over for Michael Vick. As the Eagles enter their bye week, Vick continues to get healthy. However, just because Vick is healthy, doesn’t mean he must go back to being the starting quarterback.

Michael Vick said it himself in a recent sit down with 94WIP sports radio in Philadelphia: “In all honesty, in all fairness, how can you take a guy out of the game who’s been playing so well?”

The quote pretty much says it all. Even if Chip Kelly doesn’t actually name a starting quarterback at all this season, it’s pretty hard to argue with what Vick said.

From The Outhouse To The Penthouse

The Eagles are now in first place in the NFC East and can extend their lead this weekend, even though they don’t play, with a Cowboys loss to the Giants. The division has not been very good this season but the teams are still close.  Right now, it is truly anyone’s division to take.

At this point, the only way any NFC East team will make the playoffs is by winning the division. Even with the Eagles recent success, the other teams in the NFC Wild Card hunt are simply better.

I’m not saying it is impossible, just not likely at this point.

At any rate, there is still a playoff spot to be had for the Eagles, Cowboys, Giants and Redskins.

Birds vs. Birds

The Eagles are on their bye week this weekend, but will return to the field on December 1st when the Arizona Cardinals come to Philadelphia.

The Cardinals beat the Eagles in Arizona last year, which kick started one of the worst losing streaks in Eagles history.

It will be in interesting game as both teams have similar records and While the Eagles’ offense has been excelling, so has the Cardinals’ defense.

This is actually shaping up to be a pretty good game.

We’ll see on December 1st which birds fly higher. Until then…

  1. Nick,

Good piece but you still have typos sneaking into your work.
