Bird Is The Word Week 9: @ Oakland Raiders

Posted: November 7, 2013 in Eagles

Bird Is The Word.

Wow.

After losing two straight games at home, the Eagles traveled to Oakland to take on a Raiders team that has been on the rise recently.

I am not sure if it was the Eagles taking out their frustrations or what, but they came out firing and did not look back. Simply put, the Eagles pummeled the Raiders, winning 49-20 in what was perhaps their most complete performance of the season. While their special teams did not see much action, their offense was unstoppable and their defense was stellar.

Needless to say, the Eagles came out and made quite a statement.

Nick Foles

Foles Gold

If I had to sum up the game in two words, here’s how I would do it: Nick Foles.

In what was by far his best game of the season, Foles threw for 406 yards and 7 touchdowns, tying Peyton Manning, who threw 7 touchdown passes against the Baltimore Ravens on opening night of the 2013 season, for most touchdown passes in a single game.

I was feeling good about today, as the Eagles have been strong at home, but I was not expecting what I saw (nor was anybody else, really). It was certainly a hell of a way for Foles to state his case as a legitimate starter in the NFL, although it is still too early to tell if he can be a consistent starter week after week. That will be determined at the end of the season.

There are probably going to be some “yeah, but” people who are going to say “yeah, but he was playing against the Raiders”. I’ve got news for you, 7 touchdowns is 7 touchdowns. Rather than be a skeptic or a troll, just give Foles credit where it is due. He accomplished something that only 6 other quarterbacks have done, 3 of which are enshrined in the Hall of Fame. Not only that but Foles is only the third quarterback to accomplish the feat without throwing an interception.

For that I have to say congratulations from one Nick to another. You deserve it.

Philadelphia Eagles or Oregon Ducks?

Chip Kelly

The Eagles looked more like the Oregon Ducks against the Raiders. They came out fast and furious and before the Raiders even knew what hit them, they were down 21-3. The last time they had any kind of offensive output like this was week 1 against the Washington Redskins.

Personally, I am not fully convinced just yet. Don’t get me wrong, I loved what I saw just as much as the next Eagles fan. However, the offense is not consistent enough.

The Army Needs a Field General…

Nick Foles, Matt Barkley, Michael Vick

For the first time since 1998, the Eagles find themselves without a definitive starting quarterback. Nick Foles is more than  likely going to get the start this Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, but Chip Kelly has not made it clear who he is going with moving forward. Until he does that, the Eagles aren’t really going to go anywhere.

This entire season is about what figuring out what works and what doesn’t. It’s a year of transition and a year of trial and error. That being said, Chip Kelly needs to have a clear starting quarterback before next season begins.

These last few weeks have featured a revolving door at the quarterback position. Granted, it is mostly due to injuries to Michael Vick and later Nick Foles, but it did raise the question of whether committing to injury-prone Michael Vick as the team’s starting quarterback over the up and coming Nick Foles. Many people felt that the mobile Vick would excel in Chip Kelly’s spread option offense better than Nick Foles. The fact is that if Vick can’t stay healthy, he will not excel in any kind of offense.

At any rate, Chip Kelly is going to have to have an answer to the quarterback question going forward if he wants to succeed in Philadelphia.

From the Black Hole to Titletown

Minnesota Vikings v Green Bay Packers

The Eagles will travel to Lambeau Field for an afternoon match up against the Green Bay Packers. While Foles is all but certain to get the start for the Eagles, Seneca Wallace will likely get the start for the Packers. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers left Monday night’s game against the Bears with an injured shoulder, which was later determined to be a fractured collarbone, and will miss 4-6 weeks.

The Eagles catch a break with Rodgers injured, but this will not be an easy win by any means. It will certainly be interesting to see how Nick Foles performs for the Eagles a week after throwing a record 7 touchdown passes against the Raiders.

We’ll see how it plays out on Sunday afternoon. Until then…

    Nick,

You are improving. Watch your use of “Don’t get me wrong”as a lead into your next sentence. Find another way to say, “Don’t get me wrong” and mix ’em up.

Thanks for sending me your Blog.
