Bird Is The Word Week 7: vs. Dallas Cowboys

Posted: October 21, 2013 in Eagles

Bird Is The Word.

This was the matchup that every Eagles fan was looking forward to.

It was a battle for sole possession of first place in the NFC East at Lincoln Financial Field as the Eagles took on the hated Dallas Cowboys. It was Midnight Green vs. Bandwagon Blue.

However, What was an anticipated game for Eagles fans turned into the most forgettable game of the season in the span of three and a half hours.

Both teams got off to a slow start and following series after series of disappointment from the Eagles (and the Cowboys for that matter) the Eagles went into the locker room at half time down 3-0. It was the first time ever that a Chip Kelly coached team (at any level) was held scoreless in a half.

The second half was pretty similar to the first half, except that the Cowboys were able to generate some offense while the Eagles continued to squander opportunity after opportunity. The Eagles went on to lose the game 17-3 and head into this week with many questions left to be answered.

Hopefully they can right the ship and avoid a loss to the lowly New York Giants next week at The Linc.

I Pity The Foles…

After the game, I was wondering what many Eagles fans were wondering: What the hell happened to Nick Foles? Two weeks ago he came in for an injured Michael Vick against the New York Giants and continued to guide the Eagles to a win. The next week Foles got the start against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and promptly threw for 296 yards and 3 touchdowns, while rushing for another touchdown en route to a 31-20 win.

With news that Michael Vick would be inactive for the game against the Cowboys, Nick Foles was in line for the start and many people felt that with another stellar game Foles could legitimately state his case for the starting quarterback job in Philadelphia. Needless to say 80 yards and no touchdowns and 25 rushing yards was not very convincing.

As if 80 yards and 0 touchdowns was not bad enough, Foles went down hard on a third and goal play in the fourth quarter and was treated in the locker room for a head injury. This brought a rough end to a very rough outing.

Another Barkley in Philadelphia (And No, It’s Not Charles…)

With Michael Vick ruled out earlier in the week, rookie QB Matt Barkley, a 4th round pic out of USC, took the reigns as quarterback. Although the game was all but over by the time Matt Barkley came in, he showed some flashes of brilliance. He finished the day with a respectable 129 yards, however he also threw 3 interceptions.

Now just because a player is a rookie, doesn’t mean that they are bad. Unproven maybe, but not bad. However, with a rookie comes rookie mistakes. Barkley’s interceptions were largely the result of rookie mistakes, especially his third one. However, the rookies that go on to flourish in the NFL (or any sport for that matter) are the ones that learn from their mistakes early on and get better over time.

I firmly believe that Matt Barkley will have a pretty good career in the NFL. Whether that will be in Philadelphia remains to be seen, but he certainly showed some signs of promise in his brief outing against the Cowboys. Granted, USC quarterbacks do not have a great track record in the NFL as of late (ex. Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Mark Sanchez), but Barkley could very well be the one to buck the trend.

Only time will tell…

Turns Out The Eagles Have A Defense After All

Perhaps the biggest highlight of the games was Demeco Ryans' interception of Tony Romo which was returned 36 yards into the red zone. Unfortuantely the offense squandered another opportunity and had to settle for a field goal.

Perhaps the biggest highlight of the games was Demeco Ryans’ interception of Tony Romo which was returned 36 yards into the red zone. Unfortunately the offense squandered another opportunity and had to settle for a field goal.

In every “Bird Is The Word” post that I have written I have mentioned the Eagles defense. If it seems repetitive and annoying I apologize, but the defense is such an important part of this team. Not to mention, they are probably the only positive that the Eagles can take away from a game that was full of negatives.

Despite allowing 17 points to the Cowboys, the defense continued to show signs of improvement on Sunday afternoon, even generating a couple of turnovers when linebacker Demeco Ryans and safety Earl Wolff intercepted Tony Romo.

At this point all that can be asked from the Eagles D is to continue to get better every week and do whatever they can to get the Eagles offense the ball.

Not So Friendly Confines

The Eagles lost their ninth consecutive game at Lincoln Financial Field, which is a franchise record. The last time the Eagles  won at home was week 3 of last season when they beat the New York Giants after Lawrence Tynes missed a field goal as time expired, giving the Eagles a 19-17 win.

For whatever reason, the Eagles have not been able to win at home. Personally, I am completely baffled by this. It hasn’t happened at any previous home of the Eagles. I don’t understand how the team struggles so much at home. I don’t know how they can succeed if they can’t win at home. Who knows how long it will take for them to figure this out.

Fortunately, the Eagles will get another chance to end their home losing streak when the New York Giants come to town next Sunday afternoon. To say that they need this win is an understatement.

Whether it is Michael Vick or Matt Barkley starting, simply put, the Eagles need to find a way to win at home.

    Nick,

Attached are my suggested changes in the first paragraphs of your Blog. These are my opinions and have to be regarded as such, i.e. opinions. How do you feel about me changing your stuff? I didn’t want to go further on this Blog for fear that you would begin to resent my intrusion.

By the way, have you identified your audience? Or, to put it another way: To whom are you writing your Blog and I hope it’s not just to your college friends and colleagues. If it is, you must broaden your scope. The answer to this question is something that you must always keep on your “top of mind” while you are writing your Blog. Would you ever write a letter without knowing the person to whom it is addressed? F.Y.I., your audience is your “person.”
