He Said What?…

Riley Cooper

To say the least, it has been an interesting off-season for the Eagles. New head coach, new coordinators, new faces and a new offense.

Now the Eagles find themselves in the headlines for all of the wrong reasons.

Wide Receiver Riley Cooper was at a Kenny Chesney concert held at the Eagles’ home stadium, Lincoln Financial Field. While there, a cell phone camera captured Cooper, who by that point had been drinking quite a bit, on his way out making a racist remark towards one of the security guards (who was black).

In the interest of not offending anyone, I am not going to say what Cooper said. However here is a link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dEQxO8Yuas. (Fair warning though, it contains some offensive language).

Upon seeing the video, my first question was this: WHAT THE HELL WAS HE THINKING !?!

It’s bad enough that the Eagles are without one of their top receivers after Jeremy Maclin was lost for the season when he tore his ACL during mini camp. Now, Chip Kelly has to deal with yet another receiver who is not practicing right now. The Eagles need all of the help they can get at Wide Receiver and Cooper’s bad decision leaves the Eagles without another one for the time being.

What an idiot…

Now, I don’t think Cooper should be suspended. He was fined and issued an apology, which appeared to be very genuine and remorseful. Clearly he is embarrassed by his actions, as well he should be.

NFL: Philadelphia Eagles-Press Conference

Riley Cooper remorsefully apologized in a press conference days after a video surfaced of him making a racist remark towards a guard at the Kenny Chesney concert at Lincoln Financial Field.

I just got back from a seminar for young adults and one of the things that was told to myself and the other coaches there was that “the camera is always on”. In other words, no matter where we are while we are there, someone is always watching. For celebrities and professional athletes not only is the camera always on, but they always have a live mic as well.

It drives me nuts when a celebrity or pro athlete says something stupid, like Cooper did. Clearly he was not thinking, but simply put there is no excuse for this. As he tries to rebuild with what is left of his reputation, his teammates are slowly forgiving him (some more than others).

It would be nice to think that this is the last time that something like this is going to happen and that professional athletes will stay out of trouble. Unfortunately this is probably not the last time an athlete is going to open their mouth when they shouldn’t have.

Who know what athlete will be next?
