Michael Vick: Good Guy or Bad Guy?

Posted: September 27, 2010 in Eagles

Michael Vick has been nothing short of incredible on the field, leading the Eagles to 2 wins thus far. However, his off the field life as still taken center stage.  While Eagles fans are happy to see their team succeed on the field, some fans are not happy with Michael Vick.

I never had any hatred toward Michael Vick. It was more of a “I don’t like him, but I don’t hate him either” type of thing. I did not like the whole dog fighting issue at all, or all of the other legal problems he faced. When Vick was signed by the Eagles two years ago, I didn’t really have a problem with that. At the time Donovan McNabb was our starting quaterback and Kevin Kolb was McNabb’s backup, leaving Vick in the role of third-string quarterback. The idea of Vick being  the Eagles starting quarterback seemed rather far-fetched (no pun intended).

Then in April 2010, the Eagles traded Donovan McNabb to the Washington Redskins, leaving Kevin Kolb as the starter and Vick as Kolb’s back up.

During the second quarter of the Eagles opening game against the Packers, Kevin Kolb was injured after being tackled. Vick came in for the remainder of the game and, despite the loss, looked very sharp in the second half. With kolb unable to play against the Detroit Lions, Vick started is first regular season gamein nearly four years. Vick had another great outing, throwing for 284 yaards and 2 touchdowns.

This made for a very interesting week for head coach Andy Reid. Reid was adamant that Kevin Kolb was his quarterback, only to name Michael Vick the starter for week 3 against the Jacksonville Jaguars the next day. Once again Vick was outstanding, throwing for 291 yards and 3 touchdowns, as well as a rushing touchdown of his own.

Despite all of this, there are plenty of Eagles fans that, despite his success, still do not like him. I have never been a fan of his either. I never liked him, but I never hated him either. He served his time and regrets what he did (or so it seems). I don’t think Michael Vick is the horrible human being that some people are making him out to be. I am more concerned with the Eagles than I am with Vick. It almost doesn’t matter to me who the starting QB is. I would like to see Kolb do well, but it appears like Michael Vick is getting back into his 2004 form.

I am not a huge fan of Michael Vick, but I am a huge fan of any quarterback that leads the Eagles to victory (be it Kevin Kolb of Michael Vick). And if that quarterback happens to be Michael Vick, then so be it.
