Philadelphia, PA-

After 13 years the Philadelphia Flyers are going to the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Flyers defeated the Montreal Canadiens 4-2 in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals, and 4-1 in the series.

However, it was the Canadiens that got on the board first when Scott Gomez ripped a wrist shot through the legs of Michael Leighton just 59 seconds in to give the Canadiens an early 1-0 lead.

Not exactly the best start for the orange and black. Granted, there was 59 minutes and 1 second left until the game was over.

That would not be the only goal scored in the period.

Mike Richards chased down a clearing attempt to beat Jaroslav Halak and tap in the rebound into an empty net, tying the game at 1.

The Flyers did not slow down after the intermission. Arron Asham received a pass from Matt Carle and beat Halak with a nifty move to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead.

Not even two minutes passed when Jeff Carter capitalized on a tic-tac-toe  play and sent the one timer past Halak to give the Flyers a 2 goal lead.

Michael Leighton was once again sensational, saving 26 of Montreal’s 27 shots on goal. At this point, The Prince of Wales Trophy was getting closer and closer to the hands of the Flyers.

Nearly 7 minutes into the period Scott Gomez beat Michael Leighton with a wrist shot to cut the lead to 1, and sending the Wachovia Center crown into a brief silence.

Flyers fans were finally able to rejoice when Jeff Carter netted an empty net goal after Mike Richards was able to chase down the puck to ice the game, and the Conference Championship, for the Flyers.

Though legend says not to touch the Conference Championship trophy, Captain Mike Richards picked up the trophy and skated it directly into the Flyers locker room, though that is not the trophy they are going after.

The Flyers will head to Chicago, where the will open the Stanley Cup Finals Saturday night at 8 on NBC.
