Penguins visit Flyers for “Game of the Week.”

In the NHL season, January means several things:

The midpoint of the season, the trade deadline is looming, the all-star game is getting closer (or Winter Olympics, depending on the year).

January also means that it’s really getting to be “crunch time” for the teams that still have a shot at the playoffs, and I am very much referring to the Philadelphia Flyers.

That being said, the Pittsburgh Penguins will pay a visit to the Wachovia Center this Sunday at 12:30 (on NBC), and quite frankly, the Flyers need this win a lot more than the Penguins do. This will be the fourth game in a six game home stand for the Flyers, and every game from here on out is more and more important, as the games go by.

The Penguins are currently in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, and are coming off of a 6-3 loss to Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals. Goalie Marc-Andre Fleury recently recovered from a broken finger.

The Flyers, meanwhile, have been red hot, going 3/3 in the first 3 games of this 6 game home stand, and will be looking to make it 4/4. Though they have been fighting for their playoff lives, the Flyers have been playing pretty good hockey lately. If they want to make the playoffs, then they need to keep the pedal to the metal, and not let up. The bottom half of the Eastern Conference is a mess. One loss and the Flyers could go from 6th all the way down to 10th. I think the Flyers will make the playoffs without question. (There’s too much talent on this team for them to miss the playoffs).

Funny thing is, this time last season, the Penguins were struggling to stay in the playoffs, kinda like the Flyers are now, and 6 months later, they were hoisting the Stanley Cup. I know it’s a little too early to say what’s going to happen in June, but I’m just saying…
