Flyers visit “The Igloo” for Round 2 of the “Battle of Pennsylvania”

The Flyers will visit Mellon Arena for the 2nd round of the “Battle of Pennsylvania” (and the first game in a home and home series with the Penguins) a week from today (Tuesday December 15 7 pm on VS.)

The Penguins have been playing like, well, a team with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin should be playing, and are in a battle with the New Jersey Devils for first place in the Atlantic Division, which is a stark contrast to last year’s Penguins who were fighting to stay in the playoff picture at this point of the season. (Long story short, they made the playoffs and, well, you know the rest.)

Meanwhile, the Flyers have found themselves at the wrong end of the Division. They are currently in last place in the Atlantic Division, but only by 2 points, to the Islanders, who they play tonight (7 pm on VS.). They are still looking for their first win under Peter Laviolette.

Obviously, the biggest story since the October meeting between these teams is behind the Flyers bench. Head Coach John Stevens was fired on Friday evening and replaced by former Carolina Hurricanes head coach Peter Laviolette. After being shut out in back to back game for the first time in years, The Flyers decided that a change was needed, thus relieving Stevens of his duties. (Flyers captain Mike Richards was rumored to have been relinquishing his captaincy, after Stevens’ firing. The players, of course put the blame on themselves, not Stevens.)

The Flyers fell to their cross-state rivals 5-4 the first time these two teams met this season back on October 8th in Philadelphia, and would love nothing more than to get a win against the rival Penguins. Maybe by then, Peter Laviolette’s system will be fully intact in the Flyers. It seems like no matter how well the Flyers play, the Penguins always find a way to beat us. (I’m not saying that the Penguins don’t play well. As much as I hate the Penguins, I have to admit they’re a good team.)

We’ll see what happens next Tuesday (Dec. 15)  at Mellon Arena (7 pm, VS.)
