Penguins Visit Flyers for first round of the “Battle of Pennsylvania”

Posted: October 7, 2009 in Flyers

New season, new players, same rivalry.

“The Battle of Pennsylvania”, “The Turnpike Tussle”, “The Keystone Clash”, call it what you want.

The 2009-2010 NHL season is underway and the first game between the Philadelphia Flyers and their cross state rival, the Pittsburgh Penguins, is just days away.

The Flyers 2008-2009 season came to an end at the hands of the Penguins, who then went on to win the Stanley Cup, leaving a bitter taste in the mouths of many Flyers fans (myself included). It was a bad ending to a good season.

That was then, this is now.

The Flyers made numerous key additions this year, most notably all-star defenseman Chris Pronger, and controversial goaltender Ray Emery, the latter of which is ready for a new beginning. Another key addition is another veteran defenseman, Ian Laperriere, adding more strength to the Flyers defense.

The Penguins will be just as hard to beat as they were last year. They are not going to go down easy. While they have had their share of off-season moves, most notably the departures of defensemen Hal Gill and Rob Scuderi, they will be coming out firing on Thursday night.

Who will take round 1? Tune in to Comcast SportsNet (or FSN Pittsburgh, depending on whose side you are on) this Thursday at 7 pm (et) and find out.
